Tamarind Agua Fresca | Tamarind Cooler | Agua de Tamarindo
Tart, sweet and just a touch tangy, this Tamarind Agua Fresca is just what you need on a scorching summer's day to cool you down. Easy to make, all you need to make this delectable Mexican drink are 3 ingredients: tamarind, water, and sugar. What I love about Tamarind Agua Fresca is that it leverages the cooling properties of the nutrient-rich tamarind very well to lower core body temperature and keeping you cool.
Equipment
- 2 Bowls
- 1 Spoon
- 2 Glasses (for Serving)
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Tamarind
- 1 Cup Water
- 2 tsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Lemon Juice Optional
Instructions
Extracting the Tamarind Juice (See Notes)
- Soak 2 tbsp tamarind in 1 cup warm water for 5 minutes.
- Now use your fingers to mash the soaked tamarind and then squeeze it to extract the juice.
- Separate the pulp from the juice.
- Now add yet another 1 cup water and once again mash & squeeze the pulp to extract the juice.
- Discard the pulp and mix the two tamarind extracts together.
Making the Tamarind Agua Fresca
- Next add 2 tsp sugar into the tamarind juice and mix well. I have made this with jaggery as well and it tastes just as good.
- {Optional} Add 1 tsp lemon juice and mix well. I did not add any.
- Refrigerate the Tamarind Agua Fresca for 30 mins.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve the Tamarind Agua Fresca chilled and/or with ice.
Notes
- You could use 1 tbsp of store-bought thick tamarind extract, though it often has salt in it.
