Aaaaaappoooooossss………Till a few years ago, this is a cry that used to echo in the streets of Mumbai and it was this cry that heralded the onset of summer. We used to rush to the balcony to spot the seller of Alphonso or Hapoos mangoes and beckon him home so that Daddy could bargain and get us the King of Mangoes.
The luscious fruit would be warmly nestled in hay and packed is wooden crates. You did not even have to unpack the crates for the aroma of the Hapoos to waft around your home; just the mere presence of a packed crate was enough. When we finally got to open the crate and fish out the warm mangoes, oh the pleasure….:-)
Now-a-days we get our Hapoos packed in cardboard boxes or worse still in plastic bags. 🙁
This year my home has been a-flush with Alphonso or Hapoos mangoes; thanks mainly to Rohan Shinde, a young man who got me Devgad Hapoos via a friend in Ratnagiri and Vishwas, my chauffeur, who is from Ratnagiri. What one does not do for a good supply of Hapoos!
Normally, Daddy, Anand (my brother) and I are too busy eating the delectable fruit to make anything with it. This year, however, we got two lots of mangoes at the same time. So I had to be quick on my feet and think of things to make with them.
Since it is scorching hot in Mumbai, what better option than Mango Milkshake. Gets done in a jiffy and most welcome when we return from work in the evening.
So here we go!
How to Make Mango Milkshake
Serves: 4
Ingredients
- Alphonso Mangoes – 5
- Chilled Milk – 3 Cups
- Sugar – 2 tbsp (Optional)
Method
- Cut the Alphonso Mangoes into large pieces.
- Scoop the flesh out using a spoon.
- Whisk the sugar, mango pulp, and sugar for 2 minutes.
- Enjoy Mango Milkshake cold or chilled.
Tip
- Do not adulterate with ice-cubes. 🙁
- This is more of a thick shake so you could reduce mangoes to 4, if you want a lighter version of the Mango Milkshake.
