I made this Rice Roti Upma (Rice Roti Poha or Kottu Pathiri) as a way to use up leftover Rice Rotis. Once again, the result is a low-potassium recipe that can be used as a snack or breakfast in a Renal Diet.
As you can see, I have been creating a series of low potassium recipes that can be incorporated into a Renal Failure Diet. Cooking for people with Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease (Advanced CKD) can be quite challenging as we have very limited options, especially if the person suffers from hyperkalemia or excessive potassium in the blood. In such cases, we have to severely restrict the potassium in food, because otherwise it can lead to severe heart problems.
For people suffering from hyperkalemia, all fruits and greens are prohibited as are many every day vegetables, pulses, and grains. So creating a varied and interesting diet needs some serious research and innovation. White Rice is one ingredient I can use without restraint and so I am experimenting with traditional dishes to make them low potassium.
This Rice Roti Upma (or Rice Roti Poha) is the result of one such experiment. It is a variation of a similar dish made with regular wheat rotis. I made this dish in an attempt to make breakfast and snack interesting. That it was relished by the rest of the family just made my life easier as I could serve this as a breakfast to all. 🙂
This recipe assumes that you have Rice Roti | Tandalachi Bhakri | Pathiri on hand. I usually make a large batch in the morning and then use some to make this Rice Roti Upma while saving the rest for lunch.
Disclaimer: I am NOT a trained dietician or nutritionist. This recipe is something I have used for my family member suffering from Hyperkalemia and it worked for us. Please consult your doctor and/or nutritionist before using the recipe.

- First, add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds and wait till they splutter.
- Next, add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds and 1/4 tsp finely chopped green chillies.
