Sattu or powdered roasted bengal gram is an Indian superfood rich in plant-based protein and other micronutrients. One of the simplest ways of including this gluten-free flour in your diet is as Sattu Sharbat, known as Sattu Drink in English. This traditional summer drink is not only nutritious, it also cools the body and helps combat the fierce heat of Indian summers.
About Sattu: An Indian Superfood
Sattu is especially popular in the Northern Indian state of Bihar and the neighbouring state of Jharkhand, though it has gained popularity across India. This protein-rich, fibre-rich flour is widely used in summer because of its ability to cool the body. As a result, Sattu ka Sharbat is often used as home remedy to combat body heat.
100 gms of Chana Sattu has about 20 to 25 gms of Protein, 65 gms of Carbohydrates, and 15 to 18 gms of fibre. Because of the high-protein content, in India, it is used as a Whey substitute.
You can use Sattu to make:
- Sattu ka Sharbat
- Sattu Paratha
- Sattu ki Tikki
- and more…
While Chana Sattu, the variation made with Bengal Gram, is most popular, Sattu is also made with Barley, yet another grain known to cool the body.
More About Sattu Sharbat
In my recipe for Sattu ka Sharbat, I have used sugar, salt and lemon juice as flavouring agents. You can also use only sugar to make a sweet version of this drink.
How to Make Sattu Ka Sharbat | Sattu Drink

- Add 2 cups of water and 1 tsp lemon juice, and stir till the sugar dissolves.
- Add 3 tbsp Sattu ka Atta and mix well. Ensure there are no lumps.
