If you want to beat the heat, then look no further than this Tamarind Agua Fresca. Called Agua de Tamarindo in Mexico, this tangy and mildly sweet refreshing drink is easy to make and needs just 3 (with an optional 4th) ingredient.
If you are like me and suffer from high core body temperatures, then summers can be even more unbearable than usual. In hot weather, the only thing that helps me is food that helps lower my core body temperature including:
- Sabja Water
- Various types of buttermilk:
- Ragi Ambli | Ambali | Ragi Malt with Buttermilk: A Summer Cooler
Tamarind Agua Fresca is yet addition to this list of summer drinks and has proven really effective. Tart and just a touch sweet, this drink leverages Tamarind’s inherent property of lowering body temperature.
Called Agua de Tamarindo in Spanish, this cooling drink is essentially sweetened Tamarind Water. All you need to make it is tamarind, sugar, and water. Occasionally, people add just a bit of lemon juice as well to this drink.
Some Variations That Make Agua Fresca de Tamarindo Even More Delicious
- While I used tamarind, you could use store-bought tamarind paste as well.
- I have tried this drink with jaggery instead of sugar and it tastes just as good; and in some ways better because jaggery and tamarind are a well-known pairing. However, I do not use jaggery in summer because it raises the core body temperature.
- You could add a bit of lemon juice to this drink, if you so wish.
How to Make Tamarind Agua Fresca
- Soak 2 tbsp tamarind in 1 cup warm water for 5 minutes.
- Now use your fingers to mash the soaked tamarind and then squeeze it to extract the juice.
- Separate the pulp from the juice.
- Now add yet another 1 cup water and once again mash & squeeze the pulp to extract the juice.
- Discard the pulp and mix the two tamarind extracts together.
- Next add 2 tsp sugar into the tamarind juice and mix well. I have made this with jaggery as well and it tastes just as good.
- {Optional} Add 1 tsp lemon juice and mix well. I did not add any.

I loved the flavout of this aqua fresca. The sour taste of the tamarind was balanced by the sugar and it was a nice drink.
