In my effort to include Alsi or Flaxseed in my diet, I am trying various pachadis and podis in which it can be incorporated. This past week, I tried two such podis and today I am writing about the first of these, the Til Alsi Chutney Powder (Sesame and Flaxseed Podi).
The idea of making flaxseed podis and chutneys was to make it easier to eat decent amounts of this nutritious seed easily. The other option is to chomp on the roasted seeds (by themselves or in a salad) or then include it in chapati flour.
I always have a stock of Nuvvula Podi or Roasted Sesame Powder at home. In Andhra, we use Nuvvula podi by itself with rice or then to flavour stir-fries. This time when I made a batch of Nuvvula Podi, I also added flaxseed to it to make this Til Alsi Chutney Powder.

Recipe for Til Alsi Chutney Powder | Sesame Flaxseed Chutney Podi
Til Alsi Chutney Powder | Sesame Flaxseed Chutney Podi
- 1/4 Cup Til, Sesame, Nuvvulu
- 1/4 Cup Alsi, Flaxseed, Avisa
- 4 to 5 Red Chillies
- Salt to Taste
- Over low heat, in a kadhai, dry roast the sesame seeds till they change colour and become aromatic.
- Transfer the roasted sesame seeds to a plate and set aside to cool.
- Over low heat, in the same kadhai, dry roast the flaxseeds till they become aromatic.
- Transfer the roasted flaxseeds to a plate and set aside to cool.
- Dry roast the red chillies till they start to change colour.
- Add the roasted sesame seeds, flaxseeds, chillies and salt to the chutney grinder.
- Pulse to get a coarse powder. Do not grind for a long time as both the seeds are oily and the podi will become a lump.
- Store in an airtight bottle.
- You can eat this Til Alsi Chutney Powder by mixing it in rice or then as an accompaniment.
