I love raitas and I love red pumpkin/gummidikaya/lal bhopla. So this recipe for Lal Bhoplyacha Bharit is a great favourite of mine. I first had it, some two decades ago, at the home of a Maharashtrian friend and ever since, I make it often.
Lal Bhoplyacha Bharit (Kaddu Raita or Pumpkin Raita) is a traditional Maharashtrian dish, and is often served in traditional meals at weddings and religious functions. This steam pumpkin in yogurt is great accompaniment to rotis. It also goes very well with spicy pulaos and biryanis where its sweetness offsets the spiciness.
Making this dish hardly takes any time and that is a blessing in this searing pre-monsoon Mumbai heat like we have been suffering over the past few days!

Your red pumpkin riata sounds great. I love all the idea of green chillies and cumin as seasonings with pumpkin. Can’t wait to make.

I’ve never cooked with red pumpkin or any pumpkin for that matter. I will give it a try sometime.
The garnishing I see in the pic is mustard seeds?
Aruna Panangipally says
Do try it. I am a great fan of all kinds of pumpkins. Yes, the garnishing is mustard seeds from the tempering and a bit of the crushed roasted groundnut.
